Wrapping up my three weeks in the commercial banking rotation, I had several takeaways, and learning experiences that opened my eyes to a new side of the finance world I had little experience in. Following my mentor Matt for the duration of my three weeks, I absorbed information about loan renewals, credit analyses, and observed client phone calls and the weekly loan committees. Working on the commercial banking floor every day, showed me the daily personal interactions among lenders, analysts, and other members of the department. I had originally painted a picture of a banking department as a solemn, quiet floor with everyone typing on computers all day. However, my experience could not have been more of a culture shock. The bankers constantly collaborate and manage relationships with clients as well as each other. The lunches we were brought along allowed me to get to know more about the bank and how each division interacts with one another. Overall, I had a fantastic experience in the banking division, meeting very intelligent and personable people who taught me a lot about commercial lending and working as a collective.

With Britni as my mentor, my internship at Parkside began with a fantastic experience in commercial banking. I enjoyed witnessing her expertise as a junior lender, and I acquired practical skills in handling financial statements, writing loan documents and engaging in client calls. During loan committee meetings, I had the opportunity to observe the interactions between analysts, lenders, and relationship managers, and understand the thought process behind approving new loans. The lunches and small conversations in the office offered a wonderful chance to connect with mentors and other commercial bankers, enhancing my overall internship experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside this talented group of individuals and learn more about a career path that I previously had little knowledge of.

During this rotation, I had a revelation about commercial banking. Before working with Britni, Matt, and other team members on the bank side, I didn’t appreciate the scope of commercial banking. I thought it revolved around mortgages and car loans, but at Parkside, I discovered a whole new dimension of lending. Parkside’s focus on non-consumer lending has made the deals we’ve worked on and seen even more fascinating. In this rotation, Cameron and I learned about and contributed to the preparation of loan requests. We spread client financials, prepared and uploaded margins, wrote up credit analyses, and more. Among all I experienced in this rotation, my favorite experience was sitting in on loan committee on Tuesday mornings. It was interesting to witness the variety of loan requests/renewals that come through Parkside and see the collaboration that goes into each deal. All in all, I had a great time in the banking rotation. I worked alongside smart and sociable individuals who taught me the importance of collaboration and showed me how dynamic commercial banking can be.

Now that our time within commercial banking is coming to an end it has become a bittersweet moment. This was my third and final rotation. While being in the commercial banking rotation I had the opportunity to learn under the mentorship of Matt, Britni, and many others. Before this rotation, I was unsure of what to expect as my current position within my college's curriculum program has not given me much exposure to the intricacies of commercial banking. Throughout the rotation, Anjali and I learned about the whole loan process, assisted in internal loan updates, spread financials, compiled and input margins, and much more. While working with Matt I expanded my vocabulary and finance terminology by 100+ words. This allowed me to better be able to understand and learn while attending Loan Committee meetings. Following my time in commercial banking I can confidently say I understand more of what it encompasses than I did before. I am grateful for the time and connections I have made in commercial banking; I was able to learn what it encompasses and its importance.
